In spite of the latest generation of browsers that promise ever more audio and video, and of the graphics-led interfaces that currently feature prominently on todays most up-to-date web sites, the web is still a medium that is essentially text-based, and looks likely to remain so for the forseeable future (which admittedly in this field is not very far). A picture, after all, on the web is worth often more than a thousand words; or to put it another way, the time and bandwidth necessary to deliver graphics is still disappointingly disproportionate to that required to deliver straightforward text. Writing for this medium, however, imposes its own disciplines and requirements and it is important for writers to understand this. |
