The Importance of Being Male
I read a piece in the Korea Times today: "Pusan man commits suicide because of failure to sire son. " Even today, in this modern and developing country, the value placed on male children is still frighteningly high. Everywhere we go, in Seoul or in the country, women cluster around Kim and our baby Guy: "Kochu? Kochu?" they demand, roughly prodding his nappied "red chilli pepper" or else holding up one erect finger to demonstrate. When Kim answers ne -- yes--, they beam with delight and smack her heartily on the back. Kim's back is now bruised and red from this daily ordeal.
