Web Workshops
and Training
In addition
to custom and bespoke training and workshops, we offer for individuals
a two-day programme that will teach from start to finish how to conceive,
create, upload and maintain a web site. This will cover such aspects
as an introduction to hypertext; structuring non-linear information;
navigation and navigational elements; scanning images and preparing
for the web, using text as images; the elements of web site construction;
building web pages; formatting text; the rhetoric of hypertext; creating
hyperlinks; adding metainformation; uploading live onto a server by
FTP; testing and checking links; registering with search engines and
directories.
At the
end of a full and intensive two-day workshop, you will emerge having
created yourself a basic, say 2-4 pp, but serviceable web site. Perhaps
more importantly, because the site will have been created by the clients
themselves, you will be in a position to continue to expand, develop
and maintain the site as well as create new sites in the future.
The software
we currently use is Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop; we work
on Macs but can cater for pc users.
These
web workshops include a copy of Marc Millons latest book, Creative
Content for the Web, published by Intellect Books in June 1999
at £14.95. This is at once a theoretical as well as practical
book and is excellent background reading for anyone wishing to learn
more about the web as a publishing medium. It covers such topics as
understanding how new media differs from traditional; the impact of
the medium on the message; how to write for the web; design considerations;
creating virtual communities; giving consideration to the electronic
reader; and wider issues such as freedom of speech, the responsibilities
and morality of web publishing.
Accomodation
can be arranged at Broadway House, Topsham; The Globe Hotel, Fore Street,
Topsham; or Reka Dom Bed & Breakfast, The Strand, Topsham (room
with view over the Exe estuary and outstanding breakfasts). Details
from the Topsham web site: http://www.topsham.org
Marc Millon
